And just like that, I'm one step closer to putting college officially behind me.Thinking back, my grandparents used to tell me to enjoy being young because time flies. Now, as I finish my last college class, their wise words finally hit me. It's crazy how quickly one part of life ends, and a new one begins. However, my college experience was a bit "boring".Here's why:I was never the typical "college experience" person.- "Why don't you go out in college?" they'd ask.- "Join a sorority," they'd suggest.- "You're missing out," they'd remind.- "You'll never get these years back," they'd say.- "You're going to regret it," they'd laugh. But you know what? I find happiness in simple things like movie nights, studying, work, and spending time with my people—family, boyfriend, dog, two friends, and enjoying some alone time. The usual college dream just wasn't my thing, and that's okay. Why should doing college differently mean I'm doing life wrong? We all have our own college stories, and I'm proud I didn't follow the usual path.Last night, my final class wasn't at FIU but at Dade. I needed extra credits to graduate early, so I maxed out my semester credit count at FIU and took the last three credits at Miami Dade College with Professor Richard Tapia. This class actually turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and interesting classes in college. So, I made sure to capture a class picture—a snapshot of a short chapter well-lived.

The Job Shadow Program deadline is fast approaching on Friday, October 13! If you are a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student in the Carleton University Faculty of Public Affairs (FPA) or Carleton University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), explore relevant career paths and gain a better understanding of what skills or qualifications are needed in your field of interest. Hear what past students have to say about their experience in the Job Shadow Program:"I think this program gives students the ability to dip their feet in the world of their potential future career so they can experience the ins and outs and truly decide whether this path is for them. After speaking with [my Job Shadow Mentor], this allowed me to hear the educational timeline of someone in my field as it was something I was struggling with - should I get my master's right away, should I go to college, should I jump into the work world, is volunteering really that important along the way? This offered me insight into my own personal decisions and pathway." - 4th year Cognitive Science studentApply now: https://lnkd.in/e8X-KKX2

I'm excited to kick off this year's IUP U-SOAR program! This year, I am working with my faculty mentor, Dr. Terilyn Huntington, and researching how Star Wars can serve as a cultural/political mirror concerning our understanding of contemporary terrorism. This is important because Star Wars is the world's most popular franchise. If millions tune in, then it is bound to have a political/cultural impact on our understanding of specifically terrorism. This is a really fun project! It was inspired by a recent special topics course in the Political Science Department. PLSC 481 Sex, Superheroes, Sports, & Security, taught by Dr. Huntington, explored how international relations and media go together. I cannot wait to get started on this fun research endeavor combining a hobby (Star Wars) with my professional interests (Political Science). Interesting read and some very good points. There is a high need for more practical career advising in higher education institutions. Graduates need skills to be prepared for the workforce, not just head knowledge on a certain topic.
